One of the goals of the European Union is to establish a single market within its borders. In this context, the freedom to provide services and the freedom of establishment offers consumers a greater variety of products at more accessible prices. Due to the proximity to its neighbouring countries, Luxembourg is a pioneer in the free provision of services – and (re)insurance is one of its flagship initiatives – where most of the services developed and offered are aimed at European consumers. The historical links to international finance and the nature of its activities represents the DNA of Luxembourg; the overwhelming majority of life insurance premium collection, and most non-life and reinsurance activities carried out by Luxembourg-based companies are outside its borders. Given the current trend towards nationalist behaviours and an increasing tendency towards protectionism observed in most countries, it is crucial that Luxembourg takes a stand in favour of a European regulatory framework that takes into account the international and cross-border nature of financial services. Today more than ever, a harmonised approach at EU level is a key element for a successful industry, for a competitive and integrated insurance market. The climatic challenges that our societies will have to face can no longer be ignored! The climate emergency is unfortunately a reality. Heat waves, fires, floods... The summer of 2022 has not spared us anything and the climate crisis is affecting more and more individuals, companies and communities, in Europe as in the rest of the world. The latest reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), show that the disruption is intensifying in all regions, at unprecedented levels. Climate change is now one of the greatest risks facing our society and the global economy. What challenges will insurers and reinsurers face in responding to this climate emergency? What solutions are being considered? These questions will be part of our discussion with Ivo Hux, General Manager at Swiss RE in Luxembourg.

Originally an advisor on the drama series Hustle, Alexis Conran also exercised his talents in front of the camera on BBC Three’s Real Hustle. His task was to hoodwink unsuspecting victims, demonstrating the various tricks and traps along the way. He combines an entertaining look at how the less scrupulous can fool their victims with a serious demonstration of the frailties in processes, flawed assumptions, and the power of a story.
A trained actor and magician (and the son of a convicted con-man), Alexis was arguably half way to becoming the perfect scam artist. Fortunately his own conscience led him away from the family business. He explains that any grifter must have charm and the ability to blend in and out, but most importantly possess a heart of stone.
As well as the Hustle shows, Alexis has made appearances on Hustling America and Discovery’s Man v Expert. He has helped BBC One’s Watchdog keep the public upto-date with the latest scams - and how to avoid them. As an actor he’s appeared in Waking the Dead, Wire in the Blood, and The Durrells. He’s also hosted his own TalkRADIO show, The Radio Hustle, and is a Celebrity MasterChef champion. He presents a weekend round-up of the week's news on Times Radio, and has also attempted to persuade his tech-sceptic friend Marcus Brigstocke of the virtues of gadgets on The Joy of Techs.
After dinner and in conferences Alexis uncovers various ingenious scams, from the elaborate to the simple. He looks at the power of a high-visibility vest and asking the right question at the right time, and what these things can teach about security, human frailties, and our expectations. He also speaks candidly on system failures, the threats posed to business and the best way to protect ourselves against potential fraudsters, both in the real and the digital world. Away from fraud and security, he also considers risk, the importance of confidence, and how to craft a compelling, persuasive story.
